Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year!!!
The staff at Grand Terrace Elementary School has a united focus in providing an educational program that is balanced, meaningful, motivating, and academically challenging. Continuous improvement in academic achievement is a primary focus for our staff and students. This year we will fully implement the Common Core Standards. Feel free to visit this website for more information on Common Core Standards: http://www.cde.ca.gov/re/cc/tl/whatareccss.asp. We have developed a new report card that is aligned to the Common Core Standards. Please be sure to review the Parent Guide for more information on report cards. Your child's teacher will also explain more on this at Back to School Night.
The academic curriculum is supported by a variety of instructional strategies and enriched programs to meet the individual and diverse needs of our student population, and in order to support our teachers with appropriate instructional techniques, we have a fulltime coach on campus to assist with the implementation of these strategies within our classrooms and to support students identified as needing additional support. On Wednesdays, our teachers are provided time to collaborate as a grade level and to determine what standards our students need to be taught and consequently plan the appropriate lessons, and as we transition to the Common Core Standards, this planning time will become increasingly important. They design and administer quizzes, checkpoints, and Benchmarks to assess the skills learned and to recognize those standards not yet mastered. They then analyze benchmark results and utilize this data to identify which students are not meeting their goals and finally plan intervention for those students who did not learn the intended and taught curriculum. Acceleration is planned for students who excel.
Grand Terrace Elementary emphasizes traditional values while promoting self-esteem, global awareness, and a desire for lifelong learning. We want our students to also grow socially and emotionally through our emphasis on Respect, Responsibility, Caring and Trustworthiness, our four character traits of focus. Our commitment to helping students build strong principles, social skills, and resilience will solidify this foundation, and school-wide assemblies and in-class presentations that address these four character traits are held throughout the year. We also have a half-time counselor, whom helps to support our students and staff with meeting these goals.
The partnership that exists among our parents, students, and staff fosters a warm, caring environment. Some opportunities for parent involvement include PTO, School Site Council, ELAC, Classroom volunteer, and Field trip chaperone. We also run a Literacy Tutor program, where parents and community members attend a 1-hour training and volunteer 1 hour a week to tutor students in Reading. Stop by the office for an informational flyer.
Grand Terrace Elementary School is a Professional Learning Community, where every member of our community works collaboratively and diligently to ensure that all students learn at high levels. I'm looking forward to another incredible year here at the home of the EAGLES!
Your Proud Principal,
