I'm very excited to be the principal of Lewis School. I succeed an excellent leader, Judy Scates, who is bringing her expertise to another site in the district.
Although new to Lewis Elementary, I have more than 20 years of experience in the Colton School District, and most of that in Bloomington schools. I taught for several years at Grimes and Zimmerman. Most recently, I was assistant principal at Zimmerman and Grant schools.
We are in the middle of significant, exciting changes in education. Already, Common Core State Standards have been adopted and are being implemented. A new accountability and testing system MAPP (Measurement of Academic Performance and Progress) is being devised and will soon be in place. Part of MAPP is online assessments that will replace the bubble-in tests that have been a staple for decades. (These online assessments will be field tested this spring - students will take the assessments but no results will be published to parents or to the schools.)
The state is changing the formula for funding schools. As a result, we will have additional funds to support our students - and we will have additional accountability. With this new formula, parent and community participation becomes even more crucial. I encourage parents to participate through School Site Council, English Learners Advisory Committee, volunteering in the classroom and attending parent conferences. I will schedule parent meetings in the near future to ask parents what they most value about Lewis School, and also to ask where we can improve.
A main focus of our district is the creation of a Purposeful Community. The community -- parents, staff, students, as well as businesses, institutions and other community members -- works together in a purposeful way to create an excellent learning environment and provide extraordinary educational opportunities. Our main purpose is for our students to be successful 21st Century Learners that are College and Career ready when they graduate high school. I look forward to working with all of you to help build this Purposeful Community.
